Biography

Hello! My name is Matthew J. Milliken and it is a privilege to join the team at Hampshire Country School. It is thrilling, as an educator, to discover a program based on student strengths and dedicated to fostering a community of love and respect.

I am an educator, service provider, and lifelong learner with a decade-long career working with students of all ages. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Bridgewater State University with a double major in Political Science and History and was honored with membership in both the Pi Sigma Alpha and Phi Alpha Theta Honor Societies.

I have taught United States History, English as a Second Language, and Debate at the high school level and have worked with Jobcorps, the Boys and Girls Club of America, as well as a wide range of public and private schools and programs. I have always endeavored to work with schools that treat education as an empowering and liberating experience that is indispensable to the continuation of democratic principles. Today’s student requires education in critical thinking, the scientific method, and logical reasoning as much as he needs coaching in executive function and self-regulation. HCS excites me because students are able to build on the skills and talents in which they are already strong.

I hope to work with our students on developing and utilizing coping skills and independent living needs. I imagine we will be outside as often as is possible. Our students are imaginative and I share their interest in science fiction, fantasy, the classics, and rock n roll. I hope to engage them in writing and theater exercises, as well as encourage their love for storytelling, role playing, and world-building.
